The Primal Loft

In this article from The NY Times author Elizabeth A. Harris documents the interesting (and totally rad) culture of loft living in NY, particularly Brooklyn. I’m currently looking for a place to call home (hopefully in Brooklyn) and found the article, and especially the pictures, completely inspiring. One of my favorite lofts (pictured above) was built-out by Mark Reigelman, a 25-year old designer from Cleveland, who lives in a Bushwick loft his with his cousin and friend. Reigelman is trained in sculpture and industrial deisgn, and along with his original roommate, built three bedrooms and a loft office out of the empty space. “It was like a blank canvas,” Reigelman said of the apartment. I would love the opportunity to take on a project like this. If anyone’s looking for a roommate…

I have a lot of art school friends who do the Bushwick-loft thing, and I considered moving out there as well – but my roommates and I found a pretty stellar apartment for ridiculously cheap in West Harlem (a “true four bedroom” in real estate lingo)

I’ll actually be moving into a friend’s Bushwick loft on Moore St. in the beginning of February. It was definitely an interesting read, and gives a nice perspective on what to do with the space. If you end up making it to BK, hit me up!

Any thoughts? I’m thinking about seeing it this weekend.

That seems way too good to be true! A 3BR loft space on the UES for 1600 a month?! Unless “UES” stands for something else than “Upper East Side”…I lived in a modest 2BR with a roommate on 80th and 2nd for a bit more than that and still considered it to be a good deal.
But by all means, check it out, and if it turns out to be the real deal, take it!!

So how did the loft search go? Whatever happened?
