Who’s this guy? No, it’s not W.B. Mason. It’s Michael W. Haar of Freeman’s Sporting Club on Horatio Street! The picture below I scanned from The Sartorialist. Despite the glare you get a strong sense that this guy has some serious style. In addition to being quite the fashion maven, Haar also cuts hair at the venerable FSC and recently gave me one of the best haircuts I’ve gotten in a long while. If you haven’t been to FSC or had the luxury of a “Haar-cut” then call the man. Your girlfriend will be glad you did!

Didn’t he used to cut hair at NY Shave in Nolita? Went there for a shave and a cut a year ago… The guys nasty on the cut and shave tip… He played music from the big band era and was very accomodating with a glass of bourbon!

I think these guys take themselves too seriously, lack humor, and therefore look ridiculous. Its one thing to have a sense of fashion and support that aesthetic sensibility with nice well made clothes. Its a quite another thing to pretend that you are a pirate dandy cowboy maverick or whatever from 1935 with some special insight into the costume of the american male. I like these guys – dont get me wrong – but can we be a little more honest about how absurd the whole obsession is?

I don’t know if I’d be able to (or want to) pull off the knickerbocker-boot-combo, but to each his own! I really like his sweater.

Adam: yes he did. He’s been cutting at FSC for about a year now thogh.
Andy: To be fair, this is on the extreme end of how Mike dresses. He’s my barber and as such I see him about once a month. Generally, he’s got full length slacks and rather than knickers, but it’s definitely a full lifestyle choice. That being said, I wouldn’t ever think to describe him as humorless or really even all that serious. He has a specific look and he runs with it. I don’t think he takes his look any more “seriously” than any other well dressed man, it just happens to take a little more work.
