The Aesthete | Andrew Chen

Andrew Chen is the founder and co-owner of 3sixteen, a six-year old menswear brand based in NYC.  He is also the co-owner of Self Edge New York, which opened in July of 2009 and carries some of the world’s finest denim.  With partner Johan Lam, Andew launched 3sixteen’s first full collection for fall 2008 and has an ongoing collaboration with Maine-based Quoddy for hand-sewn moccasin chukkas.  “We’re not trained in fashion,” Chen says. “We want to make pieces that will be able to last a long time. Our jeans are really meant to be something that people can build their wardrobe around.” And it would never have happened if he hadn’t bailed on the safe route. “I’m really thankful to get to do what I love every day,” Chen admits. “It makes all the difference in the world.”  It certainly does…

“This outfit pretty much stems from the watch I picked – an Anonimo Militare. My favorite watches are almost always tool/instrument  timepieces, which I like because they’re carefully considered, are  built to serve a purpose, and have no extraneous decorative features.  Thus, I chose pieces which are all clean, basic, and heavy on function.”
